New York trade or “vocational” schools offer a wide variety of certificates, diplomas and other types of programs that are designed to give people a specific skill they can, hopefully, gain employment with fairly quickly.

Their programs are generally much shorter than those required to get a traditional college degree, and tend to involve much more “hands on” rather than academic learning. They’re also generally a great deal less expensive than credit courses at a full-scale college or university, and often have few admission requirements. A few of these schools, however, do offer bachelor’s and associates programs that are more comparable to those at at traditional college.

Some training schools in the health or arts categories listed here aren’t always put under the heading of “trade schools,” but we wanted to provide the broadest possible listing of New York schools that offer real-world career skills training. Popular categories for New York technical schools include automotive, electronics, culinary and a wide variety of tech training like repair and maintenance of air conditioning and other complex systems. Many of these skills can be applied either by working in a company or in starting your own company. Other trade schools focus more on office-based skills like bookkeeping, medical coding, computer repair or court reporting.

ITT Technical Institute, Albany
Very large national institute with learning centers in over 30 states. It has three main schools that provide training in information technology, electronics technology and drafting and design.

Mildred Elley, Albany
Elley is a private school with two-year programs in vocational and technical areas. The school focuses on getting students ready to either go into the workforce quickly, or to move on to four-year bachelor completion programs. Degree programs offered include business management, information technology, paralegal studies, office & event management, digital multimedia design, game design, massage therapy, medical assisting and practical nursing (LPN program).

Ridley-Lowell Business & Techical Institute, Binghampton Campus
