Famed private school situated in a variety of old and new buildings around Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village, a lovely (though nowadays somewhat crowded) area of lower Manhattan. NYU offers top undergrad programs in many specialties including liberal arts, dentistry, business, arts and social work. It’s graduate programs include law and medical schools, as well as one of the nation’s most highly regarded MBA programs (Stern School of Business). Pace University Manhattan Campus

Pace, which has a Manhattan campus opposite New York’s City Hall, right by the financial section, has long been a private school where middle class kids get qualified to move into real professions. The University has five different schools for arts and sciences, business (Lubin School), nursing, education and computer & information systems. Almost 100 different majors are offered, and the university has over 13,000 students. The tuition of about $16,000 per year is more than a public school, but far less than many private institutions.

College of New Rochelle Rosa Parks Campus

On 125th Street in northern Manhattan, Rosa Parks “New Resources School” is for students at least 21 years old who have a high school diploma or its equivalent. The school is unique in that, while it’s designed to give students a foundation to move on to successful careers, the emphasis is definiately on liberal arts. Students have a good deal of flexibility to design their own programs in communications, foreign languages, English composition and literature, psychology or social sciences.

Yeshiva University

Yeshiva aims to integrate modern teaching with the most important concepts in the Torah, but makes a point of also preparing students for secular life. Men and women study separately here. Undergraduate and graduate programs include a mix of Judaic studies, business, law and social work. Main campus is on 185th Street.

Barnard College

Manhattan. 2,400 undergrads, all women.

Barnard, the old and very famous private women’s school attached to Columbia University, was one of only a handful of colleges in New York when it was founded in 1889. This very liberal arts-focused school offers bachelor degree programs in 50-plus fields in humanities, social sciences, arts, natural sciences. A number of joint masters degree programs are offered with Columbia in law and medical specialties, as well as music degrees taught jointly with the famous Julliard School. Barnard is across the street from Columbia, in Morningside Heights, a neighborhood of uptown Manhattan that once had a questionable reputation, but has improved quite a bit.

  • John Jay College of Criminal Justice

  • CUNY Graduate School of Journalism

    Focused mainly on a single MA degree in journalism, taking advantage of it’s location in the world’s media capital to draw top teachers who are also famous writers and editors. On West 40th Street.

  • CUNY School of Professional Studies

    A cutting edge school on West 30th Street focused on the needs of working adults. Offers both online and classroom teaching, with certificate, degree and even non-credit programs in varied subjects including immigration law, education, management, labor studies, real estate and more.

    Manhattan College, founded in 1853, is a Catholic school that accepts students regardless of their religious leanings. While most classes were once taught by Christian Brothers, the academic staff today if comprised mainly of lay teachers. The school has a strong focus on educating the disadvantaged, and makes a significant effort to bring financial aid to students who cannot handle the cost of a higher education without it.
